First Time Fat Tire Biking in Duluth
Experience Fat Tire Biking in Duluth and Celebrate Winter
By Dave Grandmaison
There is nothing more rewarding than introducing people to an activity that you absolutely love – like fat tire biking – and watching as they fall in love with it themselves. The cold, crisp air of a winter morning… the crunching of knobby tires gripping snow… the satisfaction of getting out into the woods and onto the trail… it’s no wonder that fat tire biking is the fastest growing segment in the mountain bike industry. As Duluth’s trails have expanded, so too has the cycling community. While I totally enjoy my solo rides across the winter landscape, my greatest excitement comes from introducing people to their first fat tire bike ride in Duluth.
The thought of jumping into a new winter sport can be somewhat intimidating. For fat tire biking, there’s definitely an investment consideration. Entry level fat tire bikes can be a bit expensive and choosing the right kind of bike can be difficult without prior experience. Then there’s the learning curve associated with preparing for winter rides and figuring out the vast Duluth trail system. Luckily, there are some great ways to hit the trail and learn about the sport before making the leap into purchasing a fat tire bike. You can rent a bike from one of the local bike shops like our friends at Continental Ski & Bike or you can join The Duluth Experience for our Fat Tire Bike Adventures which include all the gear you’ll need for a fun ride and a knowledgable guide to help you learn more about the sport. It’s our passion and we’re excited to share it with you!
If you follow The Duluth Experience on any of the various social media channels – particularly Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter – you may have already seen this short video. For those of you who missed it, my new friend Jim really captures the excitement of discovering a new passion for winter adventure and fat tire biking. While many of our guests are experienced riders, introducing inexperienced folks to a new sport like fat tire biking is definitely a highlight of my personal Duluth Experience.
Two days after Jim and I hit the trails, he sent me this message:
“Just wanted to let you know that I wasn’t kidding about how much I loved the Experience of fat biking on Friday. As a matter of fact I just got back from Hartley trying out my new fat bike (purchased this morning). Thanks again for introducing me to this. Its gonna be a great winter!”
