A Behind-The-Scenes Look at Hoops Brewing
By Dave Grandmaison
If you follow the North Shore Craft Beer Scene you’ve heard the name Dave Hoops and you’ve more than likely imbibed his delicious creations of water, malt, hops and yeast. Hoops has a deep connection to Duluth and long history as a leader in the local brewing community. As a Master Brewer, Hoops created a diverse palette of beer recipes during his tenure at the Fitger’s Brewhouse… winning many awards and amassing a lot of loyal fans along the way.
Now Hoops has launched an exciting new project in the heart of Duluth’s Canal Park. Please help us welcome Hoops Brewing!
The Hoops Beer Hall Concept
The 250-seat destination beer hall comprises 9,000-square-feet in the historic Marshall-Wells building on South Lake Avenue. Hoops and his Team – led by veteran brewer, Melissa Rainville – are brewing on a 15-barrel state-of-the-art Sprinkman brewhouse. As a production brewery, Hoops will distribute to a select number of local accounts but is really focused on supplying the beer hall’s 30-tap menu. That’s a lot of beer and according to Melissa, some of the first brews we’ll see this year include: Summer Amber, American Wheat, Session Ale, Pale Ale, Blonde Ale, Hefeweizen and Double Hefeweizen.
Patrons of the beer hall will be able to enjoy their brews at beautiful “biergarten” tables made from reclaimed wood or belly-up to the copper-clad beer bar where their favorite styles will be served straight from serving tanks and kegs in the “fishbowl” – a class enclosed cooler behind the bar. The brewery will not have a kitchen but guests are welcome to order “take-in” from local Canal Park restaurants. The family friendly approach taken by Hoops Brewing also includes non-alcoholic options and nitro cold press from Duluth Coffee Company. Growlers can be filled at the taproom but Hoops has opted to provide off-sale options in the form of aluminum crowlers rather than the more well-known glass growler.
