Rahr Malting Becomes World’s Largest Maltster
World’s Largest Maltster Right Here In Minnesota
By Kris McNeal
Let’s be honest, you probably know the four main ingredients in beer – water, hops, yeast, and malt – but chances are that you don’t know where all this malt comes from. Well as it stands, a huge majority of American-brewed beers use malt that was processed right here in Minnesota by the Rahr Malting Corporation.
Here are the numbers: over 25% of all American-brewed beers contain Rahr malt; in Minnesota it’s over 90%! There’s no doubt that Rahr Malting – who produces and distributes malt and other brewing supplies around the globe – is one of the most important players in the craft beer industry. Without consistent malting it would be very difficult to make consistent beer and Rahr Malting prides itself on consistency.
The company was founded on the shores of Lake Michigan in 1847 by German immigrant and brewer William Rahr. The Rahr family started making malt to supply their own brewery and eventually became a malt supplier to other breweries in the Midwest. When prohibition hit in the 1920’s the Rahr family closed down their brewery but continued malt production
The Rahr Malting Corporation is now headquartered in Shakopee, MN – where they built their first malting house in 1935. The family-owned company is now into its 5th and 6th Rahr generations and continues to hold true to their slogan “Malt of Reputation”. Their commitment to consisency and quality has helped Rahr become one of the oldest and largest family-owned businesses in Minnesota.
Rahr Malting Expands its Operations
Rahr Malting Corporation just finished a massive expansion of their business on September 24, 2016. Completed ahead of schedule, their Shakopee facility is now the largest single-site malting facility in the world! Their new 115,000 square-foot malt house has increased their production by 70,000 metric tons to a total of 460,000 metric tons annually. That’s enough malt to brew 6 billion bottles of American craft beer! Billion… with a “B”.
Rahr also installed a 20,000 square-foot pilot brewery and technical center that the company will use to test the performance of their products in a real life brewing setting. This building features a first floor pilot brewing and micro malting facility and a second floor malt quality lab.
Other components of the expansion include an 80,000 square-foot warehouse and distribution facility for one of Rahr’s subsidiaries, Brewers Supply Group (BSG), a 15,000 square-foot maintenance warehouse for parts and equipment, and a very large parking lot to house all of the new employees – 28 full-time employees to be exact.
With the completion of this enormous expansion, the state of Minnesota is likely to see an increase in economic growth and job creation and we are likely to see more craft beers made with malted grains from Rahr Malting Corporation.
