Canal Park Brewing Wins Solar Energy Award

Brews From The Sun Awarded To Duluth Brewery

In June, Solar United Neighbors announced the winners of its annual Brews From The Sun competition to crown America’s Favorite Solar Craft Brewery. This progressive competition brought together solar and craft beer professionals with 44 breweries competing across the three categories. More than 13,000 votes were cast during the six-week competition by craft beer enthusiasts and solar energy supporters from around the country.

Maui Brewing Company placed first in the regional brewery category, Mad Mole Brewing – a North Carolina won that I hadn’t heard of – won in the microbrewery category, and our friends at Canal Park Brewing Company took the crown in the brewpub category!

Canal Park completed their 38-panel, 16kW solar installation on the brewery’s rooftop in early 2019 and are exited about expanding their sustainability initiatives which also include repurposing hot water from their heat exchanger by capturing it in their “hot liquor tank” and using it as sparge water in their next batch, donating spent grain to a local ranger to be used for cattle feed, and usnig 100% pre- and post-consumer biodegradable paper products in their restaurant.

According to Paul Kaz, Owner at Canal Park Brewing, “We’ve been working towards installing solar since we opened in 2012, so just getting the panels up and running was a huge win for us. Winning American’s Favorite Solar Craft Brewpub was icing on the cake. We’re so grateful for the support of our staff, those involved in designing and implementing our system, and of course every one of our customers who voted and continues to support us by stopping in for solar-powered craft beer!”

“It’s exciting to be part of a company that cares about the environment,” said head brewer, Benjamin Gipson. “Being able to utilize the power of the sun to brew beer is something I never thought I’d be doing. It’s a great feeling and it’s something our customers really appreciate.”

In honor of their prize, Ben and his team brewed the Sunshine Harvest Leichtes Weizen, a German-style wheat beer with notes of banana, clove, and sweet bread.

Thanks to Paul, Ben and the Canal Park Brewing team for taking substantial steps to reduce their carbon footprint. I’ll drink to that… cheers!
