Wilderness First Aid & First Responder Training in Duluth!

Join us for our Annual Wilderness Medicine Workshop – a hands-on workshop that provides high-quality training and certification in Wilderness First Aid. Each spring The Duluth Experience and the Hartley Nature Center host instructors from Longleaf Wilderness Medicine to provide two content-rich, skill-based courses – Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder Recertification.


The Wilderness Medicine Workshop is designed to meet the needs of outdoor enthusiasts and wilderness professionals alike with hands-on training in injury prevention, risk assessment, and treatment of injuries and illnesses in remote environments. The two courses will provide up-to-date information and evidence-based treatment guidelines taught by professional educators and experienced medical providers.

Wilderness First Aid Training & Certification

This training is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts – paddlers, hikers, backpackers – who want to be prepared when exploring the woods and waters of Northern Minnesota.

Wilderness First Responder Recertification

Professional recert for guides, trip leaders, and enthusiasts who spend considerable time in remote settings and are responsible for taking groups out to explore the backcountry.

Wilderness First Aid (WFA) – Limited Availability

Who Should Take This Course >> When you’re out on the trail or paddling the Lake Country, you need more than basic first aid training. You’ve got to be able to assess risk, make informed decisions, and possibly save a life. This is where ingenuity and creativity combine with formal medicine training… this is the Longleaf Wilderness Medicine’s Wilderness First Aid course. This course is designed to provide students with a sound introduction to wilderness emergency medical training and is ideal for individuals who take frequent trips into the backcountry or may be called on to respond during a natural disaster.
Certification >> Your Wilderness First Aid certificate is valid for 2 years after the course completion date.
CPR >> CPR training is not included but can be added after registration for $65.
Prerequisites >> You must be 16 years of age or older to attend.
Cancellation & Refund Policy >> If you cancel before September 20th, 2019 you will receive a full refund. Payment is non-refundable after September 20th.

Workshop Highlights:

During this Wilderness First Aid course, you will learn how to assess patients, treat common injuries and illness, provide longterm patient care, and decide when to call for more help. You’ll learn strategies for prevention of injuries, as well as hands-on skills like splinting, wound care, and managing spine injuries.

After the course, you’ll prepared to handle medical emergencies, treat minor backcountry health problems, and improvise solutions when help is not available.

*CPR certification is required for your WFA certification to be valid but is not a prerequisite for attending the course and learning the skills. Contact Longleaf Wilderness Medicine for more information.

Wilderness First Responder Certification Duluth

Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Recertification – Limited Availability

Price >> $269 per person
Date >> October 18th thru the 20th, 2019

Who Should Take This Course >> Wilderness First Responder certification is the standard in medical training for individuals managing groups in remote settings. This course provides professional level wilderness medicine training for guides, trip leaders, and enthusiasts who spend considerable time in the backcountry or folks who are responsible for taking groups out to explore the backcountry.
Recertification Requirements >> Longleaf Wilderness Medicine will re-certify individuals who have previous completed WFR training from a provider whose curriculum meets the WFR SOP Guidelines. Please contact Longleaf if you are unsure if your previous course meets these standards. Individuals seeking re-certification for their WFR must present a currently valid WFR card on the first day of the course. A WFR certificate will not be issued to individuals without proof of current certification or who have a certification which has expired.
Recertification >> Longleaf Wilderness Medicine Certifications are valid for two years from the date of course completion. Wilderness First Responder certification has a one year grace period in which an individual can re-certify without taking a full WFR course. During the one year grace period the certificate is not valid. All Longleaf WFR certifications are only valid with a current CPR certification.
CPR >> CPR training is included with your WFR Recertification registration.
Prerequisites >> You must be 16 years of age or older to attend and have current WFR certification (see above).

Register for the WFR Recert Course

Workshop Highlights:

Coursework for recertification students will follow that of the WFA training with added emphasis on WFR-level skills. During the WFA course you will receive additional course work, skills testing, and will be required to successfully complete a written exam and final skill tests on the third day of training to qualify for recertification. You’ll also test on CPR during the final day of the workshop.

Longleaf Wilderness Medicine uses a WFR curriculum developed using evidence-based, field tested research. Their curriculum combined with their instructors’ passion for teaching creates an fun & effective learning environment that will prepare you to step up as an emergency medical provider if the need arises.

*Longleaf’s Wilderness First Responder course is approved by the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and meets the SOP guideline for WFA courses and is recognized by the American Camp Association.
