Two Harbors is now home to Spokengear Cyclery and Cedar Coffee Company – a pair of businesses owned by Dan and Kirsten Cruikshank. It’s a cool business combination of great coffee, interesting smoothies and sandwiches, local beer and a full bike shop and outdoor-focused retail space. And the space is beautiful.

Spokengear offers bicycle sales, rentals and repairs by certified bike mechanic – Mark Alsumand – and a variety of bicycle brands including NORCO, BMC, SALSA, SURLY and ADVOCATE. They’ve got mountain bikes, road bikes, gravel bikes, fitness bikes, city bikes and adventure bikes – something for everyone!

“If we don’t have what the customer needs in stock, we can order it to be shipped within one to three days. Spokengear is adding products weekly and we want to provide whatever local customers and tourists are looking for.” said Dan. Eventually the store will offer apparel, accessories and lightweight camping gear for bike packers and hikers.

Spokengear’s Team hopes that the new store will be a gathering place for a growing community of cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts on the North Shore. The coffee shop will offer a full menu of espresso drinks using beans roasted locally by Duluth Coffee Company. The licensed kitchen will also serve breakfast sandwiches and skillets, lunch sandwiches and salads – with indoor and outdoor seating. The cafe will use local vendors and offer locally grown and produced foods as much as possible including ice cream from Love Creamery.

Spokengear is located in a beautiful six-acre cedar grove in Two Harbors – an area that the City of Two Harbors has wanted to develop for a long time. It’s the perfect location for this type of business – great scenery and access to nearby hiking and bicycling trails.

Dan and Kirsten have come up with a really cool business model. Spokengear is a General Benefit Corporation with three branches to their operations: bicycle and outdoor retail store, coffee shop, and manufacturer of Cedaero Bicycle bags that are designed and produced in a sewing shop on site. Cruikshank has made a commitment to brand the products Made in USA using domestic materials.

Spokengear was developed with many local partners including: the City of Two Harbors, IRRRB, National Bank of Commerce, Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC), Minnesota Business Finance Corporation (MBFC), and the Northland Foundation.

“We are grateful for the local support and interest in our new businesses, and we truly hope we can offer products and services to benefit residents and tourists who love the North Shore!” said Kirsten.
